The Arizona component of The American Institute of Architects recognized excellence in architectural projects and practices at the 2016 AIA Arizona Design Awards Gala on Oct. 14 at the Phoenix Art Museum. Over 400 architects, students, clients and industry professional gathered in celebration of the projects and companies being honored at this premier event. The winners, who are registered and licensed AIA Arizona architects, exhibit excellence in design, planning and construction.
The award recipients were chosen by a distinguished group of architects from Charleston, SC. The Jury Chair, Ray Huff, FAIA of Huff + Gooden Architects and Director of the Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston, was the guest of honor and the main presenter of the awards. This year, there were two separate juries – one for projects and one for practice. Project jury members included Eddie Bello, AIA and principal of Bello Garris Architects; Michael Maher, CEO and NCARB of Horizon Project Foundation, Inc.; and Nico Larco, co-founder and co-director of the Sustainable Cities Initiative in Portland and associate professor of architecture at the University of Oregon. Practice jury members included Thomas M. Savory, AIA and LEED AP BD+C at Watson Tate Savory Architects, Inc.; Marjorie Longshore, AIA with SMHa Architects and Michelle Smyth, AIA at McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture.
It was each jury’s intent to honor exceptional built and unfinished work, establish practices of excellence and to nurture new values and activities that contribute to design and design appreciation. The jurors recognized achievement under four categories: design, practice, leadership and performance. The jury dispersed awards in three echelons of distinction: medal, honor, merit and citation, with medal and honor being the most prestigious.

Elegant. Sophisticated. Orchestrated sequencing. Clever misdirection of the entry sequence set up a marvelous anticipation of “what’s beyond….”. The project was elegant in the detailing that relied on conventional building materials, but crafted to a well-honed sophistication. The inclusion of construction detail drawings was much appreciated by the jury as the drawings affirmed the level of a thoughtful tectonic.

The church was one of the first submissions the jury deliberated, yet the jury unanimously chimed “should automatically move forward”. The jury noted that, “perforated metal screen – metaphorically the Shade – was the driver for this scheme that transmogrified a collection of simple ordinary structures into a redefinition of the very language of religious architecture. With adroit and simple moves the architects shifted the cultural meaning to redefine worship and social space to realize the blurring of the two into a cohesive and truly modern re-expression. The project brought new meaning to familiar adage ‘less is more’.”

The architects facing this daunting challenge elected to turn this home into a highly sophisticated “modern” house while sympathetically respecting its “borrowed” pedigree. No easy feat, but one the jury immediately recognized as an excellent, elegant and thoughtful reinvention. Juxtaposition seemed to be one of the drivers. Highly refined detailing encouraged a rapport with the pseudo vernacular Tudor architecture that has historically depended on “heavy, handmade” detailing.
