McCarthy Southwest, a division of McCarthy Building Companies Inc. (www.mccarthy.com), recently promoted David Clarkson to the role of project director. In this position, Clarkson will focus on developing and leading the various internal and external teams on a construction project to ensure a successful, integrated approach throughout all phases of the project.
From the start of preconstruction, Clarkson works closely with the preconstruction director and design team to bring added value in the design phase based on their innovations and experiences. Once construction is underway, his leadership role focuses on project management continuity with emphasis on cost, schedule and quality control.
“With his 15 years of construction experience on a wide variety of projects, David is fully prepared to move into the role of project director,” said Bo Calbert, president of McCarthy Southwest. “He has been successfully navigating and managing a very technically challenging healthcare project in Yuma most recently and has proven his leadership ability.”
He is currently overseeing the $115 million Yuma Regional Medical Center Emergency Department expansion. The project consists of a 147,000-square-foot expansion, including lower-level parking under the emergency department. The project also includes two new heliports, a three-level parking structure and a central plant expansion. The construction of the emergency department has required several make-ready projects, including the demolition of multiple existing buildings, various interior remodel projects, and a new ring-road expansion for total campus access.
During his time at McCarthy, Clarkson has been involved in numerous projects in both Arizona and New Mexico totaling in excess of $400 million. He was part of the team that completed the Hayden Ferry Lakeside Phase II office building and parking garage, the City of Tempe City Hall office building and parking garage and the University of New Mexico Math and Science Learning Center. He also amassed healthcare experience building the Presbyterian Hospital in Rio Rancho, NM, and various Mayo Clinic expansion projects in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Clarkson previously served as project manager at McCarthy and has been with the construction company for 11 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in construction management from the University of Nebraska.
